Management Team

  Ian  Hazelton
Chief Executive of Babson Capital Europe

Ian started the business in 2000 joining from Royal Bank of Scotland ("RBS") Leveraged Finance. Ian was a leading player in setting up and building the RBS's specialist acquisition finance business from a standing start in 1993 to its market leading position. As the business grew strongly in the mid to late 1990s he was responsible for managing UK senior secured loan origination and credit control activities becoming Managing Director, Leveraged Finance in 1999. In this role he added responsibility for mezzanine as well as senior loan products for UK and Continental European leveraged transactions. Prior to joining the RBS, Ian spent eight years at 3i engaged in private equity investment. He qualified as an ACA with Deloitte Haskins & Sells in 1979 (FCA in 1991). He also spent five years in the engineering industry before joining 3i. Ian is responsible for the overall management of Babson Capital Europe. Ian chairs the Babson Capital Europe Credit Committees.

 
  David  Wilmot
Managing Director

David joined in November 2000 from Société Générale ("SG") where he was Head of the UK Leveraged Finance team which he developed into a leading arranger of senior and mezzanine LBO debt in the UK market. David has extensive experience in European leveraged debt origination, execution and portfolio management. He is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and holds a BSc (Hons) in Banking and Finance from Loughborough University and an MBA from City University Business School. David is Joint Head of Mezzanine and Private Equity and a member of both the Babson Capital Europe and the Mezzanine Credit Committees.

 
  Zak  Summerscale
Managing Director

Zak joined in March 2001 from New Flag Asset Management ("New Flag") where he was Portfolio Manager for a European high yield fund. The fund was short-listed by Global Investor Magazine for Investment Excellence in High Yield for 2000. Prior to New Flag, Zak worked for the United Bank of Kuwait ("UBK"). He joined UBK as a Distressed Debt Analyst, rising to Senior Portfolio Manager in charge of both the US and European high yield funds. He qualified as an ACA with Ernst & Young in 1996. Zak heads up portfolio management and trading for Babson Capital Europe and is also a member of the Babson Capital Europe Credit Committee. He currently serves on the board of the Loan Markets Association (LMA).

 
  Adam  Eifion-Jones
Managing Director

Adam joined in May 2005 from the Royal Bank of Scotland ("RBS") where he worked in the Leveraged Finance business since 1994. Adam played a key role in the successful growth and development of this business, leading teams in the structuring and arranging of senior and mezzanine debt in addition to credit and portfolio management responsibilities. Between 2002 and the beginning of 2005, Adam was Managing Director of the national mid-market Corporate and Structured Finance business within RBS, successfully developing and managing the mid-market book with responsibility for origination, execution and portfolio control. Adam holds a BSc (Hons) in Finance and Economics and joined Babson Capital Europe to assist with the launch and development of the mezzanine business across the UK and Continental Europe. He is Joint Head of Mezzanine and Private Equity and a member of the Mezzanine Credit Committee.

 
  Oliver  Burgel
Managing Director

Oliver joined in May 2000 from London Business School where he worked on private equity and leveraged finance research. Prior to joining London Business School, Oliver worked as Research Fellow at the Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim, Germany. Oliver holds an MSc (Econ) from the London School of Economics and a PhD from the University of Warwick. At Babson Capital Europe, Oliver is responsible for fund structuring, new product launches, high-level liability management, and financial risk and compliance oversight.

 

Origination and Analysis Senior and Mezzanine

  Martin  Horne
Managing Director

Martin joined in May 2002 from Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein where he was a Vice President in the European Leverage team that focused on lead arranging and underwriting senior, mezzanine and high yield debt facilities for financial sponsor driven leverage buyouts throughout Europe. Prior to that, Martin spent three years with both KPMG Corporate Finance and National Westminster Bank. Martin is responsible for originating and executing deals from both the primary and secondary market. Martin is also a member of the Babson Capital Europe Credit Committee.

 
  Stuart  Mathieson
Managing Director

Stuart joined in May 2002 from PricewaterhouseCoopers ("PwC") where he was as an Executive in their Lender Services division in London, working on a number of insolvency cases and lending reviews. Stuart graduated with a BSc in Chemistry from Keble College, Oxford, in 1998 and qualified as an ACA with PwC in 2001. Stuart's primary responsibilities include analysing investment opportunities as well as representing Babson Capital Europe on restructurings and workouts. Stuart also supports Zak Summerscale on portfolio management and trading and is a member of the Babson Capital Europe Credit Committee.

 
  David  Hirschmann
Managing Director

David joined in May 2002 from UBS Warburg where he worked in the Investment Banking division focusing on financial sponsors coverage. Prior to joining UBS Warburg, David spent fifteen months at ABN Amro in Paris as a Credit Analyst working on structured and leveraged finance deals. David holds an Economic and Finance Degree from HEC, a French premier business school. David's responsibilities include sourcing, analysing and transacting new mezzanine investment opportunities for Babson Capital Europe's mezzanine funds. He is also responsible for the development of the manager's access to investment opportunities in the French market.

 
  Mark  Wilton
Managing Director

Mark joined in September 2005 from the Royal Bank of Scotland ("RBS") where he worked in the Corporate and Structured Finance ("CSF") business since January 2002. During his time at RBS, Mark was influential in the successful growth of the London CSF team, which more than doubled its income within this period. Mark led a number of high profile transactions, structuring and arranging both senior debt and mezzanine finance in support of private equity sponsored deals. Prior to RBS, Mark spent five years working as a Corporate Finance Adviser for both Catalyst Corporate Finance, an independent boutique and PricewaterhouseCoopers ("PwC"). Mark qualified as an ACA in 1996 at PwC and holds a BSc (Hons) in Management Sciences from Loughborough University. Mark's responsibilities include sourcing, analysing and transacting new mezzanine investment opportunities for Babson Capital Europe's mezzanine funds.

 
  Ben  Greene
Director

Ben joined in February 2006 from Deloitte where he worked in the Quantitative Risk Consulting group within the Financial Services Advisory division. Within this group Ben carried out a range of projects around the management and monitoring of market and credit risk within banks and corporate treasuries, as well as performing specialist derivative valuation and accounting work. Ben graduated with an MA Cantab in Economics from the University of Cambridge, and qualified as an ACA with Deloitte in 2003. Ben also obtained the Securities & Investment Institute Diploma in 2005. Ben's responsibilities include assisting with structuring and financial risk modelling for new and existing funds.

 
  Stacy  Hodgett
Director

Stacy joined Duke Street Capital in 2000 serving as the Fund Financial Controller for Duke Street Capital's private equity funds where she gained experience reviewing valuation and performance analyses of portfolio companies before transferring to Babson Capital Europe in August 2001. Prior to joining Duke Street she worked for KPMG's London and Houston offices managing audits of various financial institutions including fund managers, stockbrokers, retail banks, mortgage banks, and insurance companies. Stacy holds a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Professional Accounting from the University of Texas. She qualified as a CPA in 1995. Stacy is in charge of monitoring the ongoing performance of individual portfolio assets and the collation of portfolio information for Babson Capital Europe's management.

 
  Robert  Faulkner
Director

Robert joined in August 2001 from Century Life, where he worked in Investment Administration. Prior to Century Life, he spent two years at Barclays as a Corporate Services Assistant within an Asset Securitisation team. Since joining Babson Capital Europe, Robert has worked within the Fund Monitoring team and as a Portfolio Executive within the Portfolio Monitoring team. Here he gained excellent experience and working knowledge of both the CLO and the loan environment, and was responsible for the performance analysis of individual portfolio assets. Robert holds a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the University of London. His responsibilities include analysing and transacting new investment opportunities.

 
  James  Wallis
Director

James joined in April 2005 from the Economic Consulting department within Deloitte's Specialised Finance practice, where he advised a large number of public and private sector clients on a range of projects requiring specialist economic and financial input. These projects included in-depth competition analysis and regulatory advice to companies, regulators and governments, as well as providing broader strategic and commercial input to companies needing to better understand their markets, competitors and customers. James graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Industrial Economics from the University of Warwick, and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2004. James' responsibilities include analysing and transacting new investment opportunities.

 
  Rebecca  Sheppard
Associate Director

Rebbeca joined in May 2006 from Barclays Capital where she spent two years working in their Leveraged Finance Origination team in London covering transactions across Europe. Prior to joining Barclays, Rebecca spent five years with Deloitte where she qualified as a Chartered Accountant, working in their Financial Services and Private Equity Transaction Services teams. During her time at Deloitte, Rebecca was seconded to ICG where she was involved in raising their 2003 Mezzanine Fund. Rebecca holds an Economics degree from Durham University. Her current responsibilities include analysing and transacting new investment opportunities for Babson Capital Europe.

 
  Tom  Kilpatrick
Associate Director

Tom joined in August 2006 from Ernst & Young London, where he worked in the Corporate Restructuring division. Prior to this, Tom worked within Assurance Services, focusing on the Oil and Gas sector. Tom qualified as a Chartered Accountant in September 2005 under the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and holds a BSc Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics. Tom’s responsibilities include analysing and transacting new investment opportunities.

 
  Jerome  Renck
Associate Director

Jerome joined in October 2005 from CapVest Limited, a London based Private Equity firm, where he focused on mid-market LBO deals across the UK and continental Europe. Prior to joining CapVest, Jerome worked with Change Capital Partners as an intern focusing on European retail sector LBO deals and also spent two years as a Trader with Paris based hedge fund Unit Finance Conseil. Jerome holds a B.S. in International Business from Northeastern University in Boston and ESC Reims and an MBA from HEC Paris. Jerome's responsibilities include analysing and transacting new mezzanine investment opportunities and monitoring portfolio assets.

 
  Stuart  Hawkins

Stuart joined in December 2006 from UBS Investment Bank, where he was an Analyst in the Financial Sponsors and Leveraged Finance division. Whilst at UBS he focused on the execution of loans for mid and large-cap companies for LBO and corporate purposes. In addition to this he was involved in transaction origination from financial sponsors. Prior to this he interned in the Leveraged Finance team at UBS. Stuart holds a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the University of Warwick. Stuart's responsibilities include analysing and transacting new mezzanine investment opportunities in addition to monitoring portfolio assets.

 
  Camilla  Klang
Investment Executive

Camilla joined in December 2007 from BNY Mellon where she spent one year working as a Project Leader in the Global Audit department, focusing on the group's asset management businesses. Prior to this, she worked three years in the Assurance and Business Advisory practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers, specialising in the financial services sector. Camilla qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2006 and holds a BA (Hons) in International Business and German from the University of the West of England. Camilla is responsible for credit analysis, transacting new mezzanine investment opportunities and monitoring portfolio assets.

 
  Gareth  Hall
Investment Executive

Gareth joined in May 2010 from Ernst & Young where he worked in the Transaction Advisory Services team in London. During his time at Ernst & Young, he focused primarily on financial and commercial due diligence for private equity clients. Gareth qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2009 and holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics (MORSE) from the University of Warwick. Gareth’s responsibilities include analysing and transacting new investment opportunities.

 
  Philippa  Thomas
Investment Executive

Philippa joined in July 2010 from Barclays Capital where she spent three and a half years working in the Leveraged Finance and Financial Sponsor teams in London. During her time at Barclays, Philippa worked on structuring and arranging financing for private equity led buyouts in Europe. Philippa graduated from Durham University in 2006 with a BSc in Biology. Philippa’s responsibilities include analysing and transacting new investment opportunities.

 
  Chris  Sawyer
Portfolio Executive

Chris joined in September 2005 after graduating from Brunel University with a BSc in Economics and Business Finance. Prior to joining, Chris gained experience with Dexia Public Finance Bank monitoring and assessing project finance deals and with ICAP plc in group finance aiding in the preparation of monthly management accounts, both through six-month internship programmes as part of his degree. Initially, Chris worked at Babson Capital Europe as a Finance Analyst within the Fund Control team where he was responsible for the settlement of debt securities and for tracking performance of our market value funds. Chris then worked for the Portfolio Monitoring team to monitor and assess the performance of individual portfolio assets, until he joined the Origination & Analysis team. His responsibilities include analysing trading opportunities.

 
  Tom  Cresswell
Portfolio Executive

Tom joined in March 2005 from Schroders Investment Management where he was responsible for daily reconciliation of cash activities and monthly valuations on a number of UK funds. Tom graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne with a BA (Hons) in Economics and Accounting in 2004. His initial role at Babson Capital Europe included assisting in the day-to-day operations of the Almack Mezzanine Funds. Tom is now part of the Origination & Analysis team and is responsible for analysing trading opportunities.

 

Financial Control and Fund Monitoring

  Andrew  Wilson
Managing Director

Andrew joined Babson Capital Europe in July 2004 after serving four and a half years as Fund Accountant for Duke Street Capital Private Equity. Whilst at Duke Street Andrew was responsible for all aspects of equity fund administration and reporting, performance measurement, taxation and compliance monitoring and investor queries for five private equity funds with over 1.5bn funds under management. Prior to joining Duke Street, Andrew spent two years at Legal and General Ventures as Fund Administrator reporting to the Financial Controller. Andrew brings experience of administration of leveraged deal structures as well as equity instruments. He holds a BA (Hons) in Economics. Andrew is responsible for collateral administration and liquidity management. His role includes overseeing the Fund Control team and cash flow modelling to forecast liquidity and optimise investor returns.

 
  George  Williams
Director

George joined in October 2005 from Schroders Plc after 11 years working within the Finance team. Most recently George was Financial Controller for Schroder & Co., the private bank within the Schroders Group. Prior to this, George spent three years within the Financial Markets division supporting a diverse range of Treasury and Structured Products, and three years within the Group Finance team. George qualified as an ACMA in 1994 while working for Marsh & McLennan Inc, he also holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from Aston University. George's responsibilities at Babson Capital Europe include financial and management reporting, regulatory compliance, and overseeing controls over the company's assets and financial processes.

 
  Martin  Schnaier
Director

Martin joined in February 2006 from Advent Venture Partners LLP, where he spent two years as their Financial Controller. Martin was responsible for accounting, investor reporting and taxation for three institutional private equity funds. In addition, he was responsible for accounting, reporting and taxation for the management group and administration of staff pensions. Prior to joining Advent, he worked for KPMG for four and a half years during which time he qualified as an ACA in 2002. He spent three years in the financial services sector audit, specialising in investment banking, corporate finance and private banking clients. He then spent a year and a half in KPMG’s Private Equity group, specialising in private equity clients. Martin's responsibilities at Babson Capital Europe encompass all the operational management, financial control and reporting of the Almack Mezzanine Funds.

 

Investor Relations

  Bettina  Covac
Associate Director

Bettina joined in October 2007 from Credaris, a credit asset management firm where she worked as Marketing Manager. Her primary responsibilities were raising the company profile, managing investor relations and marketing. She holds a Degree in Business Administration from Munich University of Applied Sciences, and passed the Investment Management Certificate exam in December 2006. Bettina's responsibilities at Babson Capital Europe include investor relations, marketing and fundraising.

 

Compliance and Legal

  Peter  Clark
Director

Peter joined in 2007 from the London office of Latham & Watkins, where he was a senior member of the Finance Group. While in private practice, Peter represented a wide range of banks, financial institutions, equity sponsors, corporates and hedge funds in leveraged finance, debt restructurings, structured finance and cross-border acquisitions. Peter's responsibilities at Babson Capital Europe include analysing the legal aspects of investment opportunities, structuring new funds, engaging in workout and restructuring discussions with respect to distressed loan investments and handling legal and compliance issues generally. He was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 1999 and as a member of the California State Bar in 2001.

 
  Lee  Markwood
Associate Director

Lee joined in May 2009 from Barclays Global Investors ("BGI"), where he was Head of the Channel / iShares Advisory Compliance team and was responsible for compliance matters relating to the sales and marketing processes, client take on and relationship matters, fund product design and the oversight of the various BGI Branches. Prior to this, Lee has worked for 20 years as a Compliance Officer and Trustee at a number of fund management houses and banks, including Fidelity International, Cazenove Asset Management, The Bank of New York Europe and The Royal Bank of Scotland. Lee's responsibilities at Babson Capital Europe include analysing the compliance aspects of investment opportunities, structuring new funds and general compliance issues.

 
  Elizabeth  Young
Associate Director

Lizzie joined in 2009 from Lovells London office where she was a Senior Associate in the Acquisition Finance team. While in private practice, Lizzie represented banks, corporates and private equity sponsors acting on leveraged finance transactions, corporate lending, debt restructurings and cross-border acquisitions. Whilst at Lovells, Lizzie spent six months working for the banking group in the Hong Kong office and spent time on secondment to the Leveraged Finance team at Merrill Lynch and the Strategic Debt Finance team at Barclays Bank PLC. Lizzie graduated from Manchester University with a Law LLB (Hons) and qualified as a solicitor in 2004. Lizzie's responsibilities at Babson Capital Europe include analyzing the legal aspects of investment opportunities, working on restructurings, and assisting with structuring new funds and general legal issues.

 

Distribution

  Andrew  Godson
Managing Director

Andrew joined in June 2008 from Citigroup ("Citi") where he ran the Syndicate for CDOs and Structured Credit in Europe. Over his four years there, Andrew was instrumental in the growth of Citi’s CLO franchise into one of the biggest in Europe, and was responsible for the successful global distribution of more than 50 transactions. Prior to Citi, Andrew spent three years working in the Securitisation group at Nomura where he was involved in the structuring of CDOs and securitisation in esoteric asset classes. Andrew qualified as an ACA with Andersen and holds a BA (Hons) degree from Bristol University. Andrew is responsible for Babson Capital Europe's sales and distribution activities.

 
  Neil  Godfrey
Director

Neil joined in September 2009 from Barclays Global Investors ("BGI") where he was responsible for the distribution of BGI's range of investment funds across the UK and Europe. Over his five years there, Neil was instrumental in building the Financial Institutions distribution business, and was successful in distributing to a wide range of both UK and European Corporate and Financial Institution clients. Prior to BGI, Neil spent three years working across the Investment Management Community at the Northern Trust Company. Neil holds a BSc (Hons) degree from The University of London and is responsible for Babson Capital Europe's sales and distribution activities.

 
  Henry  Middleton
Associate Director

Henry joined in June 2010 from BlackRock where he was responsible for the distribution and relationship management for a range of BlackRock's fixed income funds across the UK and Europe. Over his three years there, Henry focused his efforts on developing new and existing client relationships with the Financial Institutions client base and was successful in the distribution of funds to this client base. Prior to BlackRock, Henry spent three years working as a Strategic Consultant for Accenture. Henry graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2004 with an MEng, MA (Hons) degree. Henry is part of Babson Capital Europe's Sales and Business Development team.
